UPDATE: May 2003

Man Pleads Guilty in Internet Auction Fraud

A Minnesota man has admitted defrauding about 1000 customers through an Internet sales business.

Twenty-year-old Richard Parris of Minnetrista has pleaded guilty to selling counterfeit Beanie Babies, North Face jackets and other items on the Internet. He also admitted that he didn't deliver some of the merchandise that customers ordered.

Parris pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud and one count of trafficking in counterfeit goods Friday in a federal court in Minneapolis. He had been indicted on 24 counts last February.

Parris admitted that he operated under eleven different Internet addresses and screen names while soliciting customers through eBay and a Yahoo auction site and by direct solicitation.

Authorities say Parris defrauded customers in the United States, Canada and Great Britain of more than $120,000.

This is what people have to do in order for them to investigate. If they were scammed in CA they have to file a report in CA, same for MN. Here are the steps they need to take or the police can do nothing.

1, Call Tele Serve unit (Theft by Swindle) They may have to leave a message but even if they do they are urged to keep trying until they talk to a person.

2. They have to file a Police report, they will get a case # after filing, they must write this down.

3. They must have as much evidence as possible to mail to the Dept. They will need the original form of payment, canceled check or Money order or if paid by PayPal they must call PayPal for the transaction number that proves that money from their account was moved to his. The Dept. will call PayPal to verify this info.

4. They must maill everything to the address below and they must make sure they have their case number on it.

Nothing can be done by them if they have received their beanies, fake or not, that is up to the Postal dept.

Here is the address they need to send all this stuff to.

Tonight(Sunday,Sept 10th) I received a threatening phone call from 2 females. They called my home 3 times today alone. They threatened myself,my husband, and my 2 children. I wanted you to be aware of these people as they claimed to be representing ebay and also mentioned your site. I am going to see a detective in the am tomorrow(Monday). I have already contacted ebay,Amazon, and collectingnation.

The same female called me again and said this person-she refers to only as "he"-sent my name to "everyone on the list" and asked them to call me to remove my posting from your site. She wouldn't give me her name or "his"(the bad seller in question). It looks like she got my name from ebay's request system

Update posted by: fosters5@earthlink.net

The man's name is Rick Paris and I don't know the name of the females. However, they have taken to calling my house and threatening me again-saying they will make my life a living hell etc. I just hung up on them-they called me about 5 minutes ago. It must be because I posted on collectingnation's bad trader board. He has only called me twice (I think) but never leaves his name and I have never spoken to him. I hope that someone can stop this crew. I have had several emails from people that have been scammed by them I lost count. I told them they should post on the caution list and try to get together to stop them. I am not a pro at this type of thing so I hope I instructed them correctly.

I posted right after those losers flooded your site with bogus complaints so I know it was there at one time. I sent you guys an updated version but can repost all of the info if you think I should. I believe one of the females is Consanya Payne-?Florida. She is the one who requested my phone number etc. off of eBay. She is most likely the one that is calling me.

I have saved over 40 complaints from people scammed in the last 3 weeks. I just started this campaign at 11 pm Saturday night, imagine what else can be found on him/her. This person has been doing this for a while. his registered name, address and phone number are completely different on E-bay then it is on paypal(different name state, the whole bit). He/she also has pages upon pages of scam complaints on the bad traders list. milleniumtrader@aol.com and cardman251@aol.com are one in the same. His other scams If someone bids on a cardman251@aol.com auction and loses, he then E-mails then a price list under milleniumtraders@aol.com offering then same beanies, and visa versa. I have also found pepole that he has been doing this to since at least June of the year. For payment he is giving this name and address

Rick Parris Netliquidations PO Box 8591, Minneapolis, MN.

However on E-bay he is registered as

John thompson 1682 Maple Ln. Des moines LA. 55331

with a false phone number

Message from Dana.Smyser@ci.minneapolis.mn.us

Concerning Rick Parris-Collectible Liquidations-Millennium Trader and other aliases....

If you have been defrauded by Rick Parris of Minneapolis, MN,
Here is what you need to do.

* File a police report over the phone for Theft-By-Swindle (THFTSW) by calling our Teleserve Unit at 612-673-3383. You will need to know dates, addresses, and amounts involved. They will give you a case number at the time you file the report; (you may have to leave a message and play phone tag a little before the report actually gets entered).

* Put together copies of any paperwork you may have relating to the transactions (copies of correspondence with e-bay, with Parris, the initial listing, etc...This should include a copy of your account statement showing that the money was paid out.), especially of the check/money order issued/cashed for payment. (We will need copies of both sides). Recover the original from the bank or money order company if you can.

* Mail copies of any documentation, along with a detailed written summary by you of the sequence of events; and reference the case number on this correspondence. There are some limitations of local law enforcement prosecution of internet fraud of which you should be aware.

* Due to the volume of cases handled by most local prosecutors offices, many of them are reluctant to prosecute cases where either the Victim or Suspect resides, or part of the transaction occurred in another jurisdiction.

* Many incomplete business transactions are determined by prosecutors to fall into the realm of civil tort rather than criminal fraud.

* In many cases, the Suspect may be operating out of a mail-drop or using an assumed name. No one ever meets face-to-face, so proving identity can be an issue.

* According to our last information on e-commerce, anywhere between 14% and 20% of all internet transactions on any given day are fraudulent on either the buyer's or seller's end. It is a "buyer beware" environment. When trading with someone unknown to you (either a business or an individual), it is often safer to deal through a third party broker that can complete the transaction fairly.

Due to the fact that we have had several calls regarding Mr. Parris' dealings, we have been advising all callers to file a report. With multiple complaints on this individual, we may be able to initiate an investigation, which may result in a prosecution.

If you have any further questions, you may contact me (Lt. Smyser) at 612-673-3707. If we get several Victims to follow through and file reports, and the dollar value of the combined losses is sufficient to investigate, an investigator will be assigned.

I filed the police report today and am sending them the supporting
documentation. Also, I posted to the bad trader's list in hopes that more people will file reports. I remember when talking to Peggy of the MPD her saying that they had a Rick Parris that was a minor but not at the same address as I had. I was surprised to learn that minors can have bank accounts (he is a verified member of PayPal) and according to my bank, Bank of America, a parent has to sign for this account. I guess that is where it makes the parents liable. He had an older sounding voice, so if he has reached the magical age of 18 and continued to do this scam all cases could be moved to the "big" court upon a judge's ruling and request of the prosecuting attorney.
I will continue to follow through with this action and am very much aware that cases like this can take time.
Thank you for all your help. I hope more people come forward. The larger the number the greater the chance of successful prosecution.

I won an auction for a North Face jacket ebay item # 518020753 and sent the money the next day via paypal. I sent the payment to e-mail address ricorias@yahoo.com and by default paypal sent me a reciept saying I sent my payment to milleniumtrader@aol.com. I never have seen my money or jacket since then. He has only returned two e-mails since then and both times he askes me for my jacket size and color. (I've already told him 7 or 8 times) I've sent him numerous e-mails and he no longer responds.

RICK PARRIS. I am assuming it is Rick Parris, this person has been soliciting people on Ebay for Retired Beanies at bargain prices. The catch is, he is using OUR Ebay User ID. DO NOT mix up Rick Parris and What's Hot Collectibles, we have absolutley NOTHING to do with each other. We have been contacted by 5 different people about this. We are a store located in Montrose, Ca., we were formerly known as Montrose Baseball Cards. We have been here for over 10 years!! Please, please, do not buy from the above person! Do not associate our GOOD name with his BAD name! If anyone has any suggestions that would get him to stop doing this I would greatly appreciate it!

I am writing on this board in hopes of saving someone from this creep. In late November, I was contacted by Milleniumtrader (also goes under r_pris@hotmail.com) about beanies that he had for sale. He sent me a list of his feedback for ebay which looked fine. I felt comfortable sending out $30 for a beanie that I wanted. Well, here it is Jan. 10, 2001 and I still have never received any beanie. He will not answer my emails either. I started writing to people that have done business with him before and also found oa lot of other people that he has scammed. If either Milleniumtrader or r_pris@hotmail.com contacts you about beanies or has an auction, do not buy from him. BEWARE!! I have contacted ebay about getting this loser thrown off ebay, so hopefully they will respond. IF anyone has been scammed by this creep please e-mail because I am trying to gather as much evidence as possible to give to the Minnesota Attorney General's office. His MO is to contact you when you have lost an auction and tell you that he has one for sale. DON"T BUY FROM HIM!! HE WILL STEAL YOUR MONEY!!!

People are still getting scammed by Rick Paris(and his cohorts) because they check his wonderful feedback on ebay and ASSUME he is safe. Well,of course all of his victims cannot post very much deserved NEGATIVE posting because you have to have actually bid on and won an auction that is/was on eBay. Please pass this along to everyone that you know on the auctions-NEVER buy from someone that emails you off auction to buy their stuff. This is the biggest scam running!!!Rick and other scammers like him KNOW this and use it to their advantage. Rick E-mailed me with a list of 15 or so beanie babies he'd sell me for $40 each - all rare, from #1 bear to billionaire bears. He said he'd noticed I'd bid on some old ones on eBay. I sent him $320 through paypal on December 14. Since then I've received two e-mails saying he was sorry, he'd moved, and I'd have my beanies by the end of next week. I've received every other beanie I've ordered since then from other people and even returned two fakes. Rick will not answer promptly and apparently is not considering a credit (which I've asked for) or sending any beanies. I've been dealing with this for a month now.

He told me that he sent a list of all the beanie babies that he had for sale. I told him that I was interested in the #1 Bear and Billionaire Bear, what would they cost me. I sent my $90.00 payment for both bears on September 21, 2000 and to date have not received anything. I sent him a number of emails and finally got a response that told me that the bears had the date 1983 in the hang tags. This means that they are fakes, I told him this and asked for a refund and still haven't hear from him. I keep sending him emails but nothing. I sent my complaint into the USPS and am waiting for a result. If anybody has any further information that could help, please email me. Thanks!!!! Angela

Rick has contacted me for the first time since i sent my money. it looks like he generated an explanation of his mishandlings and then just sent to every reply he had in his mailbox. he sent me the exact same letter 4 times in a row--which proves he does not even check the email or he would have realized what he had done. it just so hapens i was onine when he sent me the replies and i contacted him and told him i was pressing charges against him for fraud and that i had his address and phone #.well he then tried to say he is new at this and this ws an isolated case--i the sent him his bad traderlist page and he said it was all a misunderstanding. i badgered him for a while about my money and lo and behod this morning i checked with paypal and he sent my money back to me but i got charged 1.40 for a cancelllation fee. 48.60 is better than nothing. so for anyone that paid through paypal sed him money requests and they will keep it on file and probably return your money if you were scammed by him. keep persisting in the emails to him and threaten about the law and beleive me he will respond. good luck

Hi Everyone, I was tipped off to another e-mail address our friend Rick Parris is using:
Quickshipping@hotmail.com
I’ve spent several hours searching for all of the people who have bid on the following new items he has on E-bay for auction:

#545721584, #545722300, #545722751, #545723362, #545723736, #545724347, #546877892, #546878850, #546880397, #546881496, #546882569, #546883859

I hope I have saved a few people who have been sucked into this scam yet again. Thanks to all of the unfortunate individuals who have lost money we networked together to bring this con artist to justice. So many people have lost money either not receiving the North Face Jackets or received a counterfeit North Face Jacket. He is also working the Beanie Baby scam with the same scenario. I’m very impressed that he spent Friday, January 19th & Sunday, January 21st signing up under a new name with e-bay and adding twelve new North Face Jackets. I did notice that he only has a 3 day auction on these jackets. This is very smart again on his part for keeping it short hoping no one will catch onto him. This guy not only has scammed hundreds of people but he feels no remorse and continues to lead this life of crime. I did find it amusing that in the location field he added FAIR PRICE and left out the word counterfeit. Please do the following to help bring this person to justice:
1) DON’T SEND HIM ANY MONEY!!!!!
2) File a complaint with the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office (Consumer Complaint) you can down load the complaint and fill it out then fax or mail it in. This takes five minutes max. The phone number is (800) 657-3787 and the fax number is (651)296-9663.
3) File a complaint on the web site www.traderlist.com this site contains lots of complaints and you will find several about this guy. This takes less then 5 minutes depending on what you have to say.
4) Cancel your bids on all of the item numbers you bid on.
5) File a complaint with E-bay, his new e-mail carrier Hotmail, and Paypal.
6) Then please if you notice him while bidding on another item or receive an e-mail from him under another e-mail address then let everyone know.
7) You can also file a complaint with www.scamwatch.com and North Face.

Remember how he works:

1) Uses several different e-mail addresses to set up different sites on E-Bay and other Auctions.
2) He will notice you bidding on North Face Jackets and or Beanie Babies and contact you directly letting you know about how cheep he can provide the items your interested in.
3) He will open several e-mails on e-bay and bid against you to collect more money from you. What a guy.
4) He will e-mail you and even call you and seem so nice you couldn’t image he would be capable of being such a con artist.

If you have any others to add to this list please let me know and I will forward the information. If you would like for me to take you off my e-mail list let me know. I have so many people e-mailing me on a daily basis sometimes I’ve added people who don’t want to be on the list and I have some on my list a couple of times. Let me know and I will make the appropriate corrections. I was lucky because some kind person contacted me before I sent my money. I’m still mad that this person would take advantage of me and would actually contact me via e-mail asking what he can do to make me happy. What would make me happy is if he really carried about what he is doing by taking innocent peoples money. I still can’t believe the innocent girl who purchased the Polo leather jacket from him for her boyfriend for Christmas. Needless to say she’s in school and on a limited budget and never received the jacket. Again, NICE GUY. Please make sure to file your complaints or all of the work that’s been done to hold these people accountable has been for nothing.
Thanks

Hello. I noticed that you were bidding on North Face or other outerwear on ebay auctions. I can offer you a great jacket for an awesome price. It would be a North Face Brand GORETEX Mountain Light Parka from the model year 1999. I will also include an inner fleece liner FREE as an added bonus! These jackets retailed at the price of $350 for the outer shell and $150 for the inner fleece liner but for a limited time I will offer them for sale at the price of $160 plus $8 shipping. These Parkas are all brand new and have never been worn. I have 4 different colors available. They are Blue, Red, Forest Green and Yellow. The sizes available are small, medium, large and extra large. I am sorry, this are the only model of north face that I carry, and I only have the sizes and colors listed. Thanks

He has obviously pulled this one before and I almost fell for it. Luckily I checked ebay's discussion board and found out everything about him I needed to know. THIS GUY NEEDS TO BE STOPPED. HE'S A JERK JUST WAITING TO SEPERATE PEOPLE FROM THEIR MONEY.

Amazingly, my Libearty Beanie from Rick Parris did arrive after 5 weeks, after copying him on a complaint to eBay - so for $50 I did get something - I also had bidpay reference proving payment as evidence. I too was taken in by a direct approach, and the seemingly good eBay ratings. As expected the beanie is a fake, (full stop after A of USA on tush tag), and tag is too orange - but given all of the other comments, looks like I was lucky to get anything! My suggestion to all concerned is to keep badgering Rick on the Milleniumtrader@aol.com userid, and demand the beanie - he says to me that he will honour this ??

As stated in all other complaints listed, Mr Parris contacted me regarding an aution I was outbid on in Ebay for a Libearty bear. I was bidding for a friend at work. I asked him if he had another others he was selling and he sent me a list and stated he had excellent feedback in Ebay. I asked him what his Ebay user ID was so I could check him out and he told me whatshot!-collectibles. Well - they had excellent feedback - no negatives. So I took this man at his word and 4 of us ordered 16 beanie babies from this man totalling $468. Also told me he'd ship them to me at no cost (guess I should have caught on right then and there). Here we are, no money back and no beanies! He keeps telling me "they should be there soon." I contacted him again and told him I was onto him and wanted my money back or the beanies. He asked for a list again of what I paid for and my address so he could "check his records". I told him I wanted the beanies by Friday, 2 Feb 01, or I would demand a full refund. He promised I'd have them by then. Well, after the true owners of the "whatshot!-collectibles" Ebay user id told me about this site, I can see I'm up a creek without a paddle. I'm going to have to cough up $468 out of my own pocket to pay these people back from work...since I apparently didn't do my homework. It's nice to know that I can warn people about him on this site, generate a fraud complaint with PAYPAL, and even report him to the Minnesota Police Department. I will take full advantage of all of these avenues available to me to try and stop him from hurting more people. Feel free to email me anytime about this scoundrel.

I did not check him out on your site prior to my deal. Sure wish I had!  All my info is as follows...On Feb. 6th I lost an eBay bid for a Grunt, then was contacted by email and told "I see where you would like a Grunt", etc...I mailed my check to him on Feb.8.

He used Rick Parris, 2893 Cambridge Lane , Mound,MN 55364 ,(email) r_pris@hotmail.com, MRLiquidator82 for references.

Please let me know what I need to do to help us catch and prosecute this guy. I have enjoyed beanie collecting with my grandson for 2 -3 years now, and this is the first time this sort of thing has happened. Thank you in advance for any help you may be...Donna Jones

I do have a question about another person that I've been burned by. I don't know if you can help me or if you can tell me what I can do about this matter. I sent a check to Rick Parris for $115.00. This was for 3 beanies. This transaction has been going on since Jan. 8th. I have been in touch with him and gave him a deadline of tomorrow to receive my money back. I don't think this will happen. He has given me more time frame of when the beanies were sent and then if I didn't get them by a week ago Wednesday that I would get my money back. The money hasn't arrived either. Can you tell me what I have to do?  Thanks,   Jo-Ann

Please help stop this man!! I was bidding on a Britannia Beanie baby on ebay. I had lost the bid and was contacted by another ebay user (Rick Parris-MrLiquidator82@aol.com) that they could sell me the same beanie for the bid price ($30.00). I sent him the money order on 01/16/01. Three days later he said he had received payment and would send the beanie the next day. 7 days later still no beanie so I asked him to track the package, he said to give it two more days, I did still no beanie. I emailed him and told him I still had not received the beanie he said he would refund my money. That was on 02/16/01 as of 03/06/01 still no beanie and still no money. I have learned not to trade on the internet but I still would like to see this man get what he deserves and somehow get my money back!!! Thank You for any help you can give me.

Rick Parris sent me an email after I lost an aution on ebay for a North Face Jacket. In the email Rick Parris stated that he had the same jacket for sale and gave links to pictures of it. I attempted to purchased one of the jackets. I sent a check for $168.00 and after many emails I have not received the jacket.

Mr. Parris contacted me off line from Ebay saying that he noticed me bidding on North Face GoreTex jackets and said he had some for sale. (I later learned he was the one listing them on ebay as well and they too were part of his scam.) I made payment and shipping arrangments with him and mailed him a personal check for $158.00. He deposited my check on 2/1/01 and never sent the jacket. I emailed him several times only to be told he would mail it out immedeatly. He ofcourse never has. I would urge anyone who has come in contact with this person not to engage in any business; and if you have been stolen from, to follow all legal avenues available. With enough effort this person will be held accountable.

Was approached with offer to buy older beanies. Was given r_pris@hotmail.com as a reference. He has $74 of my money and I got nothing. Above email is now full and I suppose he's moved on to another email. This guy is really awful and stoopid. He really could have taken me for a lot more if he would have just sent the original 2 beanies. Beware.

After losing an auction Rick Parris emailed me letting me know that he had the beanies(Manny & Maple) i was bidding on. I asked him the prices and we came to an agreement. I asked for his references & he directed me to R_pris@hotmail.com After checking his references i felt it was ok to send him a money order for $50 on 2/7/01. I also let him know that this was my 10 year old daughters birthday money that she wanted to use to buy these 2 beanies she needed. I emailed him asking if he rec. the money order and he told me he did on 2/10/01 and shipped my daughters beanies out already. On 02/18/01 i still hadn't rec. i emailed him and he told me he would ship soon i told him he said he already shipped the beanies.( I was starting to get worried I might never see my money or beanies again). I then emailed him (trying to get a phone # out of him) telling him my friend was interested in some very old and expensive beanies and could i please have his # so she could call. I finally rec an email from him on 2/24/01 with his phone #. By the way it's (952) 484-5385. I then called him and got his voice mail. A little while later he called me asking for someone named Mike (Probably some partner in crime with him as i have read he is working with others in florida & i am located in florida he probably didnt recognize the # on his caller ID and thought it was them contacting him) I told him i wanted a refund and he said he would send a refund as his supplier didn't come thru with the beanies. Then on 2/26/01 I found the bad traders board (wish I had found it sooner) with complaints about this crook all over the board. I immed. called my bank the next morning to find out if he cashed my money order (he had it for almost 3 weeks) & lucky for me for some reason or another this criminal didn't cash it so i had the bank put a stop on it. If any of u have mailed a money order to him recently check with your bank to see if he has cashed it and if he hasn't they will fill out a form for u & have it stop so u can get your money back. Maybe he is being careful not to cash to many at a time because the police are hot on his butt. I sure hope so...This thief needs to be stopped!!!! I hope i was helpful in some way to help somebody recover their money as i did......Helen

I ordered a jacket for my son from this person about a month ago. He even gave me his phone number so I felt safer sending so much money. I sent the money, and after emailing him for 3 weeks with no answer, I finally found his number and called him. He said the police seized all his beanies and jackets so he could not send my jacket since the police had it. He then told me he had had some problems getting orders out on time, and people complained, that was why they came and took his stuff. He said he would paypal me back my payment. I asked him if they seized his computer, he said no, nor did they even take him to jail! He said he would paypal me that night, since he was going to get a new computer, and the one with all the proof on it would be in the closest river. He said if anyone wants their stuff they ordered to contact the police, they have it, so he is unable to fill any orders. I asked him if he was going to refund anyone. He said not likely since all his money went to a $10,000 retainer for a lawyer. I guess if he had $10,000 bucks on hand, he must have been raking it in. He said he had plenty of money, plus he was a juvenile, so there won't be to harsh a sentence. He didn't sound a bit worried. He has the perfect excuses now: if you want your stuff, the cops have it, and if you want your money back his lawyer has it. I then do a search and find this site and look at the page of complaints on him. As long as people like us keep sending the crooks money, they will stay in business!

My husband bought two fakes from Rick Parris last year also. We did get our money back on transactions. We did not realize that the two fakes we bought came from the same person. The other e-mail address I do not see on your bad trader page is ebiz_ct@yah00.com. That ID is suspended from ebay. What I did was send a mass e-mail to everyone who bought from him and found out that most received fakes. When I realized that ebiz and netliquidations were the same person I sent another mass e-mail again and included those he bought from. He sent me an e-mail and told me to have fun trying to stop him, he was going to have all his auctions private in the future so that I could not warn anyone. He did just that, then I used "ask the seller an question" and asked him if it was another fake. The next day my husband recieved a phone call at work and they threatened to sue, etc. At that time he was with ebiz and her first name was Casey. My husband asked me to stop and against my better judgment I did. I refuse to by another beanie on an auction with all the fraud going on. The auction houses refuse to get involved, they make money on them. The law is very weak on doing much about it. There is no security for the innocent consumer out there and any one who buys off the auctions take large risks. Many people do not even know they have scammed and resell the items believing them to be authentic. There are alot of great TY dealers on the net I have found in Mary Beths beanie book and I have been extremely happy with them. Just wanted to share my experience with you.
